Description:

CHASING PIRATES IN THE CARIBBEAN
Fine content A.L.S. of sailor William P. Jones, 4pp. 4to., Pensacola, Fl., July 13, 1829 to his brother. In part: "...We arrived off Havana on the 4th April...then made sail for Matanzas...then set sail for Cape Antonio...Near this cape there is a group of small islands...among which the Pirates seek shelter from justice...we went there for the purpose of taking them...two boats from this ship and two boats from the Erie...there were about 80 men, in the boats...an abundance of muskets, pistols & cutlasses...about 12 o'clock we got to a convenient place near the shore...we heard of some men three or four miles in the country...having arrived at their residence found one man in a house...concealed arms, sailors clothes, & a mariner's compass...we took him & brought him aboard the ship...safely lodged in jail...". Also included is a second letter from the same writer, 2pp. 4to., Pensacola, Aug. 5, 1821 (the year Florida was ceded to the U.S.), in part: "...We are bound for St. Domingo which you know is owned by the blacks. You have seen too I suppose by the papers, that there is a likelihood of a war between them & the French. We are going there to protect our shipping & American citizens...". In 1821 Santo Domingo successfully declared independence from Spain, without French intervention. Two pieces, very good.
