23. CHARLES CARROLL (1737 - 1832) Signer of the Declaration of Independence and member of the Continental Congress. A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo, [n.p.], May 16, 1823, to William Gibbons. Carroll expresses great concern about the crops on his estate, particularly his fear the "the fly was in my wheat" and that the fruit has been injured by the frost in May. A prominent Catholic, he also makes note that he has sent a horse from his Manor to the Seminary for the priest. Carroll's estate consisted of between 70-80,000 acres. When he died, the last of the signers, he was the richest man in the United States. Small paper loss from seal tear which affects nothing, else very good.$600-800
