Description:

CAROLINE FILLMORE'S SIGNED FOUR-PART BIBLES
CAROLINE C. FILLMORE (1813 - 1881) First Lady, wife of Millard Fillmore, 13th U.S. President. A fine religious presidential relic, the Holy Bible o four volumes, owned by First Lady Caroline C. Fillmore, with the volumes signed a total of thirteen times! The Bibles, Old and New testaments, are bound in pebble-finished black faux leather, each 6 1/2" x 10", were published by the American Bible Society in New York, 1874, and are advertised as having been: "...translated out of the original tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised...". Fillmore's signatures, two-thirds of which are in ink, appear variously on the front pastedown, front flyleaf and title page as "Mrs. M. Fillmore", "Caroline C. Fillmore", and "C. C. Fillmore". Each book is also dated: "Buffalo 1877", presumably the date Fillmore obtained these volumes. Many passages are underlined in pencil, especially in the Gospels and Psalms. Also present is a portion of a manuscript in Mrs. Fillmore's hand, six lines, in part: "...Christ says if ye love me keep my 'commandments', may the fear of man never cause us to deny Christ as Peter did, but may we in truth& humility say[?] 'Lord thou knowest all things , thou knowest that I love thee...". The edges of the spines and corners are worn, one spine cover is torn and coming loose, yet contents are clean and bright and bindings are generally quite tight. Old catalog paper labels remain affixed to the spines but could easily be removed. As these Bibles were published, and likely given to Mrs. Fillmore in the year of her husband's death, they no doubt offered her some solace in her time of grief. A fine and rare presidential relic!
