Description:

CAPTURED JAPANESE ARISAKA TYPE 99 RIFLE, BAYONET AND CARTRIDGE CARRIER
A captured Japanese Arisaka Type 99 chambered for 7.7 x 58mm, with a five round internal magazine. This battlefield pick up is the Type 99 'Short' rifle at 44 in. in overall length, it is a matching rifle showing serial number '84778', and is untouched, still retaining a strong unharrassed 'Chysantemum' on the forward topside of the receiver, and just below a safety blow hole to protect from misfires, also with the 'kanji' markings, designating it (Kyukyu-shiki 9-9-Type). Adjacent to the serial number, a series mark and an arsenal mark for 'Nagoya' are both stamped on the blued receiver. Barrel, and all other metal parts on this rifle, including the trigger grouping, folding ladder sight, and reinforced front barrel band with bayonet lug, are all blued, with some showing serial numbers. Only exception being the stamped butt plate which shows much oxidation. The original hardwood two-piece stock showing the characteristic Japanese stock splice at the butt, as well as some dents and digs from a lot of use, but still looks great, retaining all of it's original finish. Grouping includes: cleaning rod, original issue composite sling with blued metal fittings, bayonet and cartridge pouch, complete with five (5-round) stripper clips of original WWII Japanese ammunition. The Type 99 service rifle, was made by government arsenals and was developed in an evolution of weapons that started with the Nariakira Arisaka Type 30 in 1897, and continued thru the Kijiro Nambu Type 38 in 1906. Both of those rifles fired the 6.5 x 50 mm Japanese cartridge, which by the 1930s was showing shortcomings in combat. That led to the design of this model, despite being called an 'Arisaka', it was designed to correct the newly realized problems by Kijiro Nambu, with this new rifle being chambered for the newly introduced 7.7 mm cartridge, keeping some elements of the Type 30 and Type 38, such as the action, rotating safety, dust cover and the five-round internal magazine, it adapted needed changes such as a modified bolt and chrome-lined bore. Although the Type 99 rifle still has a negative reputation, it gave the Imperial Japanese forces a powerful and effective weapon to carry them all the way to defeat in this war. After being introduced in 1939, it fought every major battle in Japan's war with the United States, including the battlefields of Bataan, the Gilberts, Guadalcanal, the Marshalls, the Marianas, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and of course Tinian, where this gun was acquired, famous for later hosting the airstrip in which the Enola Gay and Bockscar took off from, to drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Brought back by our consignor's father, who was on Tinian as a Seabee, and provided the story to his entire family of how this full rig was given to him by a Marine, after he used his bulldozer to help the Marines knock out a concrete pillbox in battle. A provenance letter attesting to this story, recounted and written by the son, will be provided to the purchaser. Fine Type 30 Bayonet with scabbard, showing 100% bluing on this sharpened blade, also shows manufacturing marks of Toyada Jidoshoki Seisakusho (Nagoya) to the ricasso, with pommel serial number '3013558'. All leather cartridge pouch with Japanese owner's name painted in white to inside of lid, also showing traces of (removed) previous owners name, inside are five (5-round) stripper clips of original WWII Japanese ammunition that is all matching, but unmarked in any way. Overall excellent, and rarely encountered in this condition.
