Description:

CALEB STRONG
(1745 - 1819) Twelve-time Governor of Massachusetts, first elected Senator from that state and a member of the Hartford Convention. A fine group of eight broadsides signed while Governor, each 1p. folio size, an assortment of letters of state including passports, various appointments of Justices of the Peace, a military appointment, and so on. Documents date from 1800-1814 and countersigned by Secretary of the Commonwealth ALDEN BRADFORD. Folds some with marginal tears but each bearing a fine, clean signature at left. Along with an A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Boston, Feb. 5, 1807, to Judge George Thatcher, on integral address leaf regarding nominations for Justices. Thatcher (1754-1824) was a delegate for Massachusetts in the Continental Congress. Hole from opening affects little, otherwise very good condition. Together with an A.D.S. of JOSIAH HARMAR (1753-1813), senior officer in the Washington's Army, 1793, a docket on verso of a legal document asking questions about a claim, in part: "Dr. Sir, I know nothing at all of the persons William Morris & William Morris referred to in this letter...". Collector's sticker at top right, folds crudely reinforced at margins with tape but affecting nothing, very good; and a cryptic A.Ms., not signed and in an unrecognized hand, on 4to. sheet in full: "116 This with the whole ? of my correspondence with America tends to prove that nothing but the determined Tyranny of Britain could have produced the Revolution of the Colonies". Eleven pieces in all, a great dealer's lot.
