Description:

C.S.A. NEGRO PASSPORT
Rare partly D.S. being a "NEGRO PASSPORT," in blank [unused] oblong 12mo ca.. Titled: "Confederate States of America, War Dep't / Richmond /1865." A passport was a requirement for all blacks moving about the Confederate States after Lincoln's issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. Spaces are provided for their route, their physical description and approval signature of the Provost Marshal, undoubtedly General John H. Winder, and bearing the proviso "Subject to the discretion of the Military authorities." Printed on cheap, tan paper-stock used by the financially-pressed and endlessly besieged Confederate States during its final days. An unusual document to survive the 1865 burning of Richmond and the fall of the Confederacy. Very fine condition.
