94. JOHN BUFORD (1826 - 1863) Union major general of cavalry at Bull Run and Fredericksburg, and at Gettysburg his dismounted troopers held the crucial McPherson Ridge until reinforcements arrived. Very rare war-date A.L.S. "Jno. Buford" as Assistant Inspector General, 1p. 8vo., Louisville, Ky., Dec. 14, 1861 to Col. Edward C. Williams of the 9th Pa. Cavalry. In part: "...I am instructed by the Genl-in-Chief to inspect the troops in the Dept. of the Ohio. Please have your Regt. in line of battle at 1 o'clock P.M. on Monday...The inspection will be conducted as prescribed by the Army regulation. The men equipped as for the field...". A few slight dampstains largely in a blank area of letter, else very good. $2,000 - 3,000
