Description:

BUCHANAN HOPES TO REPAY SPAIN FOR THE LOSS OF THE AMISTAD SLAVES
Important A.L.S. of House of Representatives employee Daniel Bucke to President James Buchanan, 1p. 4to. on illustrated House letterhead, Washington, Nov. 22, 1860. Bucke advises that he has examined the journals of the House: "…relative to the slaves on board the Spanish brig Amistad and find that the Senate passed an amendment…'For the appropriation and extinguishment under the direction of the Secretary of State, of the claims of the Spanish government against the United States, recommended in the President's message, fifty thousand dollars' This amendment was rejected by the House and the Senate receded therefrom…". Heavy folds with a tiny tear at center, else very good. Along with presidents Polk and Pierce, Buchanan was a staunch advocate of paying Spain the $28,000 claimed by that country for its loss of the slaves. However, Buchanan's motivation was more likely driven by appeals from Southern slave owners who sympathized with the Spanish for their loss of "property".
