Description:

BUCHANAN WHITE HOUSE STAFF SIGNED ACCOUNT BOOK
Important bound record of wages paid to the White House staff attending President James Buchanan during his entire presidency, from March, 1857 until the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln in March, 1861. There is an entry for each month of Buchanan's presidency listing the name of the White House "servant", their position, and monthly pay, and each employee has signed beside the sum paid acknowledging receipt. The book bears the ownership signature of White House chief butler Pierre Veremeren who has signed twice using first name "Pierre" and "Peter" on the front flyleaf. Veremeren undoubtedly kept this book for Buchanan who would have submitted the expenses for reimbursement. It is interesting to note that perhaps only a dozen people were employed in attending to the comfort of the sitting president: footmen, grooms, coachmen, cooks, chambermaids, laundresses, and a "table girl" seem to have been the normal staff, with additional waiters employed from time to time for special events. Wages totaled about $150 per month, with butlers and coachmen receiving the highest pay. Covers and spine a bit worn, contents are very good. A fascinating White House item, likely unique. Veremeren would continue in the position as White House butler through Lincoln's two terms as well. From the estate of Adam J. Glossbrenner (1810-1889) Assistant Clerk of the United States House of Representatives , 1843-47, Sergeant at Arms of the House from 1850-60, and private secretary to President James Buchanan in 1860 and 1861. Glossbrenner also served in Congress from 1865-69.
