624. FRANCIS E. BROWNELL (d. 1894) Union soldier who avenged the death of Elmer Ellsworth when he shot and killed hotel owner James T. Jackson who had moments earlier killed Ellsworth for tearing down a Confederate flag. Brownell was also the first soldier to earn a Medal of Honor in the Civil War. Fine, very bold signature "Frank E. Brownell" matted with a 4" x 5" post-war photograph of Brownell in uniform, set into a wood frame. Fine.$300-400
