625. VICKSBURG PAROLE Very rare Vicksburg parole given to a captured Confederate, 1p. oblong 8vo., Vicksburg, July 4, 1863, the day the city was surrendered by Gen. John S. Pemberton!. The parole, likely field-printed, is issued to Major William F. Haines and reads in part: "...[Haines] being a Prisoner of War, in the hands of the United States Forces, in virtue of the capitulation of the City of Vicksburg and its Garrison...on the 4th day of July, 1863 do, in pursuance of the terms of said capitulation...[promise] I will not take up arms again against the United States, nor serve in any military...held by the Confederate States......nor as guard of prisons, deports or stores...until duly exchanged..." Signed by Haines and by a Union provost marshal. Very good. $1,500-2,000
