Description:

BRITISH SOLDIER'S ACCOUNT OF THE AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE
Rare book: 'An Original and Authentic Journal of Occurrences during the Late American War, From Its Commencement to the Year 1783' by Roger Lamb (Dublin: 1809). 438pp. 8vo. with index and list of subscribers, in marbled boards, spine crudely repaired with brown tape and bearing a very old Brooklyn Library '[James] A. H. Bell Collection' label, his bookplate and library label on front pastedown, library name perforates the title page which also has library number, more such defects to rear pastedown. Contents open with some foxing to the first dozen or so pages, else very good and should be restored. Nevertheless, a most important personal narrative by a soldier in the American Revolution. Dublin-born Roger Lamb (1756–1830) entered the army at 17 and joined the 9th Regiment of Foot at Waterford. He quickly rose to the rank of sergeant and, being at times attached to the general hospital, acted as a surgeon's mate or even surgeon in emergency situations. In April 1776 Lamb, with his regiment, sailed for Quebec. For the next seven years he was involved in the American War of Independence. He describes many campaigns and his part in them, including how after being captured by the Americans on two occasions he escaped and rejoined the British forces. He returned to Dublin in 1784. A fine history from an unlikely source.
