Description:

JOHN H. SCHOUTEN (1869 - ?) American Brigadier General, notably served as a Second Lieutenant in the Spanish-American War, as a Captain in the Mexican Border Service Campaign to capture Pancho Villa, and in the 32nd Infantry Division in World War I. His 'US Army, 1926 Pattern, Four Pocket, Wool Serge, 18 Oz., OD, Service Coat', dated Feb. 21, 1927, bearing a proper pair of silver, pin back General's star insignia on the epaulettes. The upper lapels bear a pair of matching and hallmarked 'US' pins, each of the very desirable pre-war screw back type. The lower collar lapels each have matching and hallmarked crossed Infantry rifles insignia. The upper left sleeve bears a pre-war 32nd Infantry Division cloth insignia patch, nicknamed the "Red Arrow", the "Iron Jaw", and the "Les Terribles" because of its less-than-stellar combat performance in World War I. The lower sleeves each have the proper mohair cloth rings of Officer's status, and lower left sleeve bears a single 'V' shape, gold bullion Six Months War Service patch, which shows slight age toning. Critically, three vintage award ribbons are present above the upper left breast pocket, including the rarely-seen 'Army Spanish War Service Medal of 1898 to 1899', the rarely-seen 'Army Mexican Border Service Medal of 1916 to 1917', and the 'WWI Victory Medal'. This uniform also shows a removable waist belt, buckle, and slider, with two sewn-in brass belt hooks in the jacket's rear sides. The garment is lined in light brown cloth, presumed rayon, and an inside pocket bears a tag with the hand-inked name and date: 'Brig. Gen. J.H. Schouten...Feb. 21, 1921'. Just good condition, as the inside sleeve linings are starting to become partially detached from age, with a small period repair on the lower left sleeve, tiny moth nips and snags, and a large stain on the rear right shoulder blade area. However, the uniform is still very presentable. Sold with its original pair of breeches, slightly mismatched in color as is very common, and tagged inside 'Champion Pants Mfg. Co.' and 'Dated Oct. 11, 1937, Spec. No. 8-30C Dated 1/12/37' To help complete this uniform, our consigner has added a khaki color Officer's style short sleeve shirt, and a very rare pre-war, black color Officer's tie, patented 1935. Sold with a lengthy biographical page on General Schouten, which lists him as enlisting in the Michigan National Guard in 1889 - which included some of the same troops that went to Cuba with Teddy Roosevelt. The sheet also confirms his service in the Spanish-American War as a Second Lieutenant in the 32nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, lists him as serving between 1916 and 1917 as the Captain of 'K' Company, in the 32nd Michigan Infantry, Mexican Border Service to catch Pancho Villa, and briefly lists his service time, units, and locations in World War I. An incredibly rare and desirable grouping, with scarce award ribbons from a three-war serviceman! -
