Description:

Rare uniform of a Second Lieutenant within the Japanese Imperial Army, includes: an M-1894 type full dress frock coat, constructed of black wool, three-quarter length, closed at the front with seven cherry blossom-bearing brass buttons, leading to a stand-up collar fastened by dual hooks and eyes. The outside of the collar is faced in red wool, against which is sewn a decorative, gold bullion border. Dual wool loops are sewn to each shoulder to house a pair of clip-on shoulder boards, each bearing one affixed star at center and a gilt button at the end. The cuffs are also faced with red wool and three sewn-on brass buttons, while the sleeves bear an intricate pattern of affixed gilt piping. The interior of the collar bears a manufacturing tag from a 'Tailor Masuda' of Tokyo. Some of the stitching connecting the piping to the sleeves has begun to come loose, and a previous owner appears to have reattached it at various spots with an adhesive, only visible upon close examination. Some of the bullion at the collar has come unraveled at spots, else fine condition. Sold with a Japanese officers' full dress cap with feather plume, lined in blue silk and bearing the gilt label 'Mori,' on the interior. The 'rising sun' insignia at the front has lost some of its gilding, else very good. Sold with an original ceremonial sash, constructed of red-and-white thread with a red tassel at each end, regrettably near severed at opposing ends. Sold with a pair of trousers, similar in style to the tunic, bears buttons reading 'FOR GENTLEMAN' and a metal tag reading 'Deponiert', and is thus sold as is. Sold with a Russo-Japanese War Medal with original ribbon, pinned to the tunic upon its delivery to our office and presumed awarded to the uniform's owner. A fine grouping.
