Lot 92
92. MILLEDGE L. BONHAM (1813 - 1890) Confederate brigadier general who commanded troops on Morris Island, at the beginning of the war, and a brigade at First Bull Run. In January, 1863 he resigned to become governor of South Carolina, after which he was reappointed to brigadier general and led a cavalry brigade in the Carolinas. A.E.S. penned on the verso of a superb content A.D.S. of South Carolina J. C. McKewn, 1p. legal folio, [n.p., n.d., likely Charleston, ca. Aug. 1, 1863]. McKewn pens a list of 15 men headed "Patrol", undoubtedly those intended to participate in the "slave patrols" used to round-up runaway slaves. Apparently, only four men appear to be qualified, the balance being described as "Over 60 years", "Non-slaveholder & over 60 years", or "Discharged". At bottom McKewn inquires of the governor: "Can the non-slaveholders over 60 years be required to do duty, and those slaveholders over that age? You will see that 4 men are appointed to perform duty over a territory 15 miles in length & from 6 to 8 miles in breadth...". On verso Bonham forwards the letter: "Ex[ecutive] Dept. Aug. 12/63 Genl. Beauregard at request of Senator McKewn. M. L. Bonham". No doubt Bonham sought to alleviate the shortage of militia by using CSA soldiers to pursue runaway slaves. Very good. $500 - 700
