Description:

BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY
(1887 - 1976) British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France. Fine content A.L.S. 'Montgomery of Alamein' as Deputy Supreme Commander' on 'Allied Powers Europe' letterhead, 2pp. 4to., [n.p.], Feb. 5, 1953 to 'J. F. Hermee[?]' of the Royal Artillery. Montgomery, obviously friends with his correspondent, speculates as to whether the man is in Japan or Korea. He notes, in part: '...You will be spared the worst of the Korean winter I hope. I will be very interested to hear what you think of the South Koreans as soldiers and Alies, and the North Koreans and Chinese as enemies. I am in Narren[?] at the moment, and John Hopkins is with me. ...I have had one very good flight over the Alps: where I took some really superb photos...I am off to the U.S.A. and Canada on 21 March and do not get back until 2 May. Then comes all the coronation ceremonies [of Elizabeth II]...' Fine, with holograph transmittal envelope. Montgomery had a love-hate relationship with the Chinese: in the following lot, he praises Mao Zedong, while in a previous lot offered by us, he denigrates the Chinese as 'chinks'.
