Description:

BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY MEETS MAO ZEDONG
(1887 - 1976) British Field Marshal who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France. Fine association T.Ms.S. 'Montgomery of Alamein F.M.', 1p. legal folio, [n.p.], October, 1961, headed 'The Writing of Mao Tse-tung'. In part: '...On the evening of 23rd September, 1961, I visited Mao Tse-tung on a house on the outskirts of HANKOW; we had an evening meal and talked for some four hours...Mao Tse-tung works through the night and does not normally go to bed before 5 a.m. or later...on the 24th September he decided he must see me again...we were to continue our talk, and in the evening he would take me swimming in the Yangtse. He also decided he wanted to give me a present...So he took a Chinese brush and wrote...the copy of a poem he had written in 1956. My Chinese hosts told me he had never done such a thing before...The handwriting of Mao Tse-tung is in accordance with Chinese tradition that calligraphy is more important than painting. His writing with a brush derives from a school of his own...' Light horizontal fold, else very good.
