BENJAMIN (1811-1884) Confederate Secretary of War and Secretary of State who became very unpopular for his convictions that Southern slaves should be armed to fight for the Confederacy, which of course eventually came to be. The only Jew in the Confederate Cabinet, he fled to England at war's end to avoid prosecution. Brief A.L.S., 1p. 12mo., Washington, Apr. 3, 1860 to Alonzo D. Faulkner. In part: "...I state that the address of Richard Taylor, son of the Late President, is `St. Charles, Louisiana..." Signature was at one time clipped off, now reattached from verso, some glue staining with owners identifying label beneath signature, generally good. $300-400
