Description:

BENJAMIN CHEW
(1722-1810) Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Province of Pennsylvania. In the early years of the American Revolution, Chew attempted to remain neutral which resulted in his arrest, along with Governor John Penn in August 1777. He was released on parole by Congress in 1778. His home was the site of the famous standoff between British and Americans at the battle of Germantown in the fall of 1777. The standoff in part transformed what could have been a decisive American victory into a defeat. Manuscript D.S. 1p. folio vellum, Philadelphia, Dec. 20, 1809, an indenture between several parties (some of whom sign the document), including: THOMAS WILLING (1731-1821), Chew, WILLIAM RAWLE (1759-1836), EDWARD SHIPPEN BURD (1779-1848) and others concerning the division of a lot of land in Philadelphia at the corner of 3rd Street and "Willing's Alley". A very attractive vellum deed, very clean with only the usual folds, overall fine condition with mostly intact wax seals.
