Description:

BENITO MUSSOLINI AND RUDOLPH VALENTINO
A fine group of material regarding Italy's most famous dictator and her most famous entertainment export! The signatures of both BENITO MUSSOLINI and RUDOLPH VALENTINO along with an original press photo, 8.5 in. x 7 in. b/w, showing Mussolini's floral tribute to the silent film star after his death in New York on August 26, 1926. Signatures are matted in a gilt frame with a two vintage photographs of Mussolini and Valentino as well as a reproduction of the press photo. Overall measurements are 14 x 20 in. Rudolf Valentino (1895-1926) enjoyed a legendary status in the world of silent film as a charismatic, elegant and romantic leading man who, to most, stood in stark contrast to the jut-jawed and pugnacious Mussolini. However, despite his lack of interest in Fascism, Valentino was skillfully exploited to become entwined with the nascent dictator. This conjoining of American Hollywood and Italian Fascism was orchestrated through a series of publicity stunts which successfully linked the diametrically-opposed men as exemplars of Italian masculinity, power and authoritarianism. These efforts culminated in the arrival of four Fascist Blackshirts at Valentino's funeral at Broadway and 66th St. bearing a wreath from none other than Mussolini himself. In reality, Mussolini – who chafed at Valentino's desire for American citizenship - had little to do with the tribute: the Blackshirts had been called in by Valentino's press agent. However, the facade worked to rehabilitate both the current American view of Italian immigrants as backward peasants from the 'Old Country', and raised Mussolini's image on the geopolitical stage. Fine condition, not examined out of frame.
