628. WILLIAM W. BELKNAP (1829-1890) Union brigadier general and Secretary of War in Grant's administration; impeached by the Senate for accepting bribes from Indian posts. Partly-printed L.S., 1p. (with additional 3p. printed circular) 4to., Washington, July 3, 1871 informing Helman Dowd of New York, "...that the President has conditionally selected you for appointment as a Cadet of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Should you desire the appointment, you will report in person to the Superintendent of the Academy, between 25th and 31st days of May, 1872..." Belknap refers the prospective cadet's attention to "...the accompanying circular..." which sets forth the admission requirements for new cadets. A few minor partial fold splits, otherwise very good condition. $30-50
