90. PIERRE G. T. BEAUREGARD (1818-1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter that started the Civil War. He also led with distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. Fine content war-dale L.S. "G. T. Beauregard Gen'l Comdg" on "Head Quarters, Department of South Carolina, Ga. and Fla." letterhead, Charleston, Aug. 12, 1863 to South Carolina Gov. Milledge Luke Bonham. In part: "...I have no control whatsoever over the actions of the Commander of Conscripts and his subordinates. I understand...from the Enrolling officer of this District, Major Perryman, that he is acting in accordance with what appears to be the President's directions...he does not disturb any one connected with local defense or Militia organizations now in Charleston, between the ages of 40 and 45...". Near fine. At this point in his career, Beauregard headed the defenses of Charleston but was obliged to bow before the demands of the state government versus those of the Richmond-based Confederate government seeking additional conscripts for its faltering war effort. $1,500 - 2,000
