BATTLE OF WINCHESTER BROADSIDE
A great war-date broadside extra, 1p. 4to., Windham County Transcript, EXTRA, boldly entitled: "News From The Eighteenth", Danielson, [CT], July 6, 1863, announcing the losses the 18th Connecticut sustained during the epic battle of Winchester while Lee drove his army north to the Maryland shore during the Gettysburg campaign. Confederate General Ewell attacked General Milroy's small command at Winchester on June 15 and after losing only 269 casualties he captured over 4,000 men, 23 cannon, 300 horses and large quantities of military stores. The 18th Connecticut was heavily engaged in the battle and this broadside was printed for the benefit of Windham County's anxious citizens who had sons and fathers in the 18th. In part: "...We opened and closed the battle losing very few killed and wounded. about 500 prisoners were taken-including Col. Ely...the killed and wounded from Windham County...are: Capt. Bates, Co. Many more POWs left at Richmond are also listed. Published from a letter written by Stephen J. Lee of Company B who survived the ordeal and was on his way home at the time.
