BATTLE OF MONMOUTH COURT HOUSE Fine content A.L.S. of John W. Vredenburgh, 1p. 8vo. with integral address leaf, Red Hook, July 4, 1778 to quartermaster Nicholas Quackenbush at Albany delivering early news of the battle of Monmouth Court House which concluded in a draw on June 28, 1778. Vredenburgh begins discussing shipments of lumber and reports that "Thursday Last a Considerable Rob [b]ery was Committee at the houses of James & John Wilson about 3 miles East of us - the men of the families being in the field at work in a piece of Corn which they finished about 3 o'clock was Returning to Rest when they got to about 60 yards of the house was fired at by the Villains who stript them & family of all their their shoes To that one of the women has not a second Shift not one cape or handkerchief Left. Diligent Se [a]rch is making but am afraid they get off as the woods is Green... " Figuring that Quakenbush could deal with a bit of good news, he adds: "Their [sic] has bin [sic] an Action on Sunday Last in jersey the particulars [sic] is not yet Come here, but from Report it is a Greatly in Favour as Genl. Washington Incamped [sic] on the field... " Usual folds with some pinholes at intersections, light toning, otherwise very good. $500-700
