AN APPOINTMENT TO THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS JOHN ARMSTRONG, JR. (1758 - 1843) Revolutionary War soldier and aide to generals Mercer and Gates, later a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress. Rare manuscript D.S., 1p. 12" x 7 1/2", Philadelphia, Apr. 18, 1785, being the appointment of Joseph Gardner to the Continental Congress. In part: "...In the Name and by the authority of the Freemen of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania...You were, by the General Assembly of this Commonwealth, appointed a Delegate: You are therefore hereby Commissioned a delegate to represent this State in Congress for the present Year.. .". Signed by Armstrong at bottom. A few wrinkles, else boldly penned and very good. Simply framed. Joseph Gardner (1752–1794) was an American physician and represented Pennsylvania in the Continental Congress in 1784 and 1785. In 1776 Gardner raised and commanded the Fourth Battalion of militia in Chester County. He also served on the county's Committee of Safety in 1776-1777, and as a representative in the Pennsylvania state assembly from 1776 to 1778.
