BATTLE OF BRITAIN COMBAT REPORT BY A K.I.A. PILOT
P/O N. HART (1915-1940) Canadian-born RAF pilot who joined the 242 Squadron at Coltishall on 18th July 1940. He claimed a He-111 destroyed on Aug. 30, 1940, a Me-109 on Sep. 15 (reported below), and two Ju-88s on the 18th. Hart did not return from a combat with Me-109s off Sheerness on Nov. 5, 1940 in Hurricane P2806, and no one in the squadron saw him go down. Signed partly-printed Battle of Britain combat report, 1p. legal folio, [n.p.], Sep. 15, 1940, in which Hart describes combat facing a total of 150 German fighters and bombers. He writes, in part: '...After an attack on a D017 which was being intercepted by three other friendly aircraft I saw a 109 heading back towards France...I then instigated a steep dive and opened fire at 150 yards which completely smashed the pilots enclosure and the cowling. Flames spurted and the 109 began to go down in a slow controlled glide, He went into cloud and I followed overshooting him...I watched as he hit the sea some eight miles off the English coast...During the early chase 1 Hurricane badly shot up and smoking heavily. No response over R/T...'. Very good.
