Description:

BATTLE OF BRITAIN COMBAT REPORT BY A K.I.A. PILOT
F/Lt. HUGH TAMBLYN (1911-1941) Canadian-born RAF pilot who joined the RAF in April 1938. With his training completed, Tamblyn was posted to 7 BGS as a staff pilot. He joined 141 Squadron and on July 19, 1940 only his own and one other Defiant survived being jumped by a group of Me-109s. Later posted to 242 Squadron, he claimed a Me110 destroyed and a Me109 probably destroyed on 7th September, two more on the 9th, a shared Do17 on the 15th, another destroyed on the 18th and a Me109 damaged on the 27th. He was awarded the DFC and decorated by the King at Buckingham Palace. Two days later Tamblyn was shot down into the sea, perhaps by return fire from a Do17. A search found his body, unwounded. He had died from exposure and cold. Signed partly-printed Battle of Britain combat report, 1p. legal folio, [n.p.], Sep. 15, 1940, in which Tamblyn describes combat facing a total of 150+ German fighters and bombers. He writes, in part: '...I was blue 2. We went to engage a vic of DO17s flying in diamond formation. I singled out the far left e/a and attacked with a number of deflection shots from close quarters. I then turned away to allow other friendly fighter to compete their attacks, in case of collision. I then saw the DO 17 again with smoke pouring from it as damage had been inflicted by five other friendly fighters. I followed the Dornier down to 2,000 feet when the crew bailed out. The bomber crashed near West Hailing in a field and according to the parachutes, one crew member was still inside...'. Very good.
