BARKER GANG WANTED POSTER
Rare wanted poster for two infamous members of the 'Barker Gang', namely ALVIN KARPIS (1907–1979) who was leader of the Barker–Karpis Gang in the 1930s, and FRED BARKER (1901–1935), co-founder of the gang, the youngest son of Ma Barker, and who would be killed in a lengthy gunfight with FBI agents. The 12.5 in. x 17.75 in. poster shows mug shot images of both criminals and offers a $1,200.00 reward for their capture and conviction in the slaying of Sheriff C. R. Kelly of Howell County, Missouri on Dec. 19, 1931. Description of both are set forth, as well as their fingerprint details and a description of the murder of the sheriff. Additionally, the poster seeks the arrest of fellow gang member A. W. Dunlop and 'Old Lady Arrie ['Ma'] Barker'. The poster is issued by West Plains, Mo. and is signed in type by Chief of Police James A. Bridges and the new sheriff, the widow Mrs. C. R. Kelly. A chip to the top margin, else very good to fine. Alvin Karpis led the gang along with Fred Barker and Arthur 'Doc' Barker. There were only four 'public enemies' ever given the title of 'Public Enemy #1' by the FBI and he was the only one to be taken alive. The other three, John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson, were all killed before they could be captured. Consigned by the owner of the largest and most prestigious crime collection in the world.
