[ Autographs ] WILLIAM WIRT ALLEN (1835 - 1894) Confederate major general who commanded a brigade of cavalry with Wheeler at Atlanta, also wounded at Perryville. Very late war-date L.S. 1p. 12mo., "Hd. Qrs. Allen's Cav. Div." , Mar. 8, 1865 to A.A.G. Lt. Hudson, in pencil Writing just days after his appointment to major general (the last such appointment made by Jefferson Davis), Allen's gives his troops' movements, in part: "...I have the honor to inform you that my whole command is across the river except those men whose horses were unable to find the men.. They have been sent to Steinback's Ferry. I have sent to order them down as soon as they have crossed the river..." At this time, Wirt was endeavoring to slow William T. Sherman's relentless advance on Fayetteville. Slight wear and soiling with a pinhole affecting one letter in signature, generally very good.
