Description:

[ Autographs ] VICKSBURG WALLPAPER NEWSPAPER An exceedingly rare edition of the Vicksburg Daily Citizen, 1p. folio, July 4, 1863, printed on a sheet of wallpaper as at that time no supply of newsprintwas available in the besieged city. The paper is dated July 2, 1863 attop, but was actually printed two days later by Union soldiers who hadseized the presses and issued the identical newspaper with their own addendum. The paper bears content concerning the siege, news as reported in the Union press, and so on, and taunts Union forces, inviting them "to dinner" in the city. When the paper was reprinted, the Union soldiers added their own taunt at bottom right, in part: "..two days bring about great changes. The banner of the Union floats over Vicksburg. Gen. Grant has `caught the rabbit'; he has dined in Vicksburg, and he did bring the dinner with him...". Though reprints of this newspaper are numerous, surviving authentic examples are quiterare. This particular piece is consigned by a former collector and recognized authority on Confederate newspapers, and excepting minor fold wear, pinholes and foxing in margins, is an extremely clean example of one of the rarest Confederate newspapers.
