[ Autographs ] William T. Sherman 1820-1891 Union major general declared by the press to be "insane", he led his army in their March to the Sea, taking Atlanta, Savannah and Columbia along the way. Interesting A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Rome, Italy, February, 1872 to James Graham, American Consul in Florence. in part: "...[I am] studying Historical Antiquities in the shape of modernm dinners, sorties, and parties. I begin to doubt the existence of those mythological heroes, orators and poets over which we toiled and suffered in youthful days ..Today I am to do St. Peter's and to see the Pope and then to San Remo to stand on ground sacred in its heroic dust.." Much more commentary on beauty of Rome and Florence, the sights he hopes to see and so on. A few folds starting to split, easily repaired on verso.
