[ Autographs ] WILLIAM T. SHERMAN (1820-1891) Union major general declared by the press to be "insane," he led his army in their March to the Sea, taking Atlanta, Savannah and Columbia along the way. S.P. 4" x 5 .5in", cabinet format, sepia-tone showing Sherman in head and shoulders, signed and inscribed on verso: "To Wm. M. Gray of Utica, NY with compliments of W. T. Sherman General, Washington D.C. Dec. 30, 1881". Also signed "W. T. Sherman General" on recto at the bottom mount. Heavy dampstains affect image tone and decrease contract, lowerleft corner lacking, else just good, with bold inscription and fine signature.
