Description:

[ Autographs ] JOHN SEDGEWICK (1813 - 1864) Union major general wounded at Antietam and Glendale, fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, killed by a sharpshooter while claiming the Confederates wouldn't be able to hit an elephant at such a distance. War-date A.L.S "John Sedgwick, Maj. Genl." on Sixth Army Corps letterhead, 2pp. 8vo. Culpepper, Dec. 31, 1863, to Col. Eli Long, in part: "...anything I can do for you in the way of your promotion will be most cheerfully done. I do not think any new regiments will be raised...the tendency Ithink is to....rely on volunteers....it is impossible to obtain recruits for the old regiments, so long as states pay such large bounties...". Moderate soiling, otherwise very good.
