[ Autographs ] Union Soldier's Letter Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo. in pencil, Camp Arkansas Post, Jan. 13, 1862 A soldier writes his family: ''..landed about 2 miles below Arkansas post... Uncle Sam holding there a fort which the rebels took away... marched till 2in the morning through the deepest mud... found ourselves on the opposite or North side of the fort, where we were placed to cut the retreat of the rebels... all this time the gunboats engaged the fort from the riverside... we advanced to within 500 steps of the breast works, which extended from the fort in a line directly from the river for about 1000 yards... the artillery came up and commenced the bombardment... we were under tire until about 3 Pm., when we retreated about half a mile to give the other regiments a chance ... we captured about 800 prisoners, 20 to 25 guns, lots of ammunition & arms that they had taken from us... it was a good haul, compensating somewhat our shame at Vicksburg... Among the killed were two sergeants of our company who fell one on each side ofme. Of the wounded is Capt. Schiller wounded severely in the thigh, who stood two steps from me...' Much more content in this highly detailed letter.
