Nantucket, off Charleston", Oct. 1, 1864 Ellwood writes his mother: '...The news of Sheridan's victory in the Shenandoah Valley has made us feel very happy... There are a number of our navalofficers that are prisoners in Charleston at present & the Admiral s ends a boat in occasionally for the purpose of carrying letters & clothing in. We tried to send some prisoners in but the rebels would not allow us to do so... the vessel he was on must have been badly damaged in the light...'
