[ Autographs ] UNION GENERALS A fine war-dated L.S. written by a officer eventually breveted a general, endorsed by four other Union generals and one brevet general! The L.S., 2pp. folio, Headquarters 46th N.Y., Fredericksburg, Va., Dec. 18, 1862, is written by Lt. Col. Joseph Gebhart to the Governor of New York, requesting that he be madea full colonel, and endorsed on a separate leaf by brevet general BENJAMIN C. CHRIST (1822 -1869. Also endorsed by WILLIAM W. BURNS ( 1825 - 1892) and ORLANDO B. WILLCOX (1823 -1907) as brigadier generals EDWIN VOSE SUMNER (1797-1863) as brevet major general, and AMBROSE BURNSIDE (1824 -1881) with the rank of major general. The A.E.S of Burns is particularly interesting, reading, in part: "...Gerhard has brought his regiment to proficiency in drill equal to the best regiments in the volunteer service. They are taught in the German language, and can therefore have only a German commander. The 46th N.Y, under Lt. Col. Gerhardt, crossed the bridge at Fredericksburg as fast as the planks were laid, and remained all night on picket in the city before the division crossed...". Marginal chipping on one corner affects several letters of Burn's endorsement well away from signature, otherwise very good.
