Description:

[ Autographs ] THE LAST CONFEDERATE FLAG FROM THE RICHMOND STATEHOUSEAn extraordinary and important grouping of Civil War relics, namely a7.5in x 3 1/8" section of the last Third National Confederate flag to fly over the Richmond Statehouse when it was captured, along with fourConfederate bank notes surrendered by Robert E. Lee at Appomattox! Therelics were attached with a metal grommet to a letter of provenance from Lt. Col. Abram B. Laurence, Chief Quartermaster of the 24th Army Corps. Laurence's letter is on the official letterhead of the 24th A.C, Richmond, May 10, 1865, and reads in full: "This is to certify pieceof bunting hereto attached is a piece of the Confederate Flag that floated over the Rebel Capitol in this city; which was cut up for distribution, as a most significant memento of this inexcusable war. The Confederate notes are a part of the "Rebel Funds" of the ƒArmy of Northern Virginia' surrendered at Appomatox by Gen. Robert E. Lee and as such were receipted by me on account of the Quartermasters Commissary, Medical and Pay Departments of that Army". On the verso ofthe letter is a note in Lawrence's hand, dated August of 1880, directing that the letter and attached relics be: "..Forwarded to Rev.James P. Mills with Compliments, A. B. Lawrence..". As mentioned above the relics were attached to the letter of provenance and are still attached to the original grommet, consisting of the flag relic and fourConfederate banknotes, all series 1864, in denominations of E5, E10, E20, and E100. Lawrence is known to have sent out a small number of these relic groupings after the war, and this lot is comparable to a similar grouping which fetched E5,500 in our last sale. The letter has some clean fold splits, and the relics and letter have minor soiling as one would expect, but overall are in very good condition.
