Description:

[ Autographs ] (GREENSBORO, N.C. POST-APPOMATTOX PAROLE) An exceedingly rare partly-printed D.S. 1p oblong 8vo., Greensboro, N.C., May 5, 1865, a post-Appomatox parole issued to Sergeant-Major Charles C. Green of the Light Artillery, signed by Green with rank at bottom. The document bears the printed promise that the parole is granted: "...In accordance with the terms of the Surrender of General Lee, Commanding Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, to Lieutenant- General Grant...". After the surrender of Lee at Appomattox on the ninth of April, Joseph Johnston met with Sherman on April 17 to discuss the surrender of his army. The initial agreement made by Sherman was considered too generous by the President, who ordered Johnson to re-approach Johnston with terms similar to those Grant gaveLee at Appomattox, which terms Johnston accepted on the 26th of April,1865. This parole, issued as a result of that agreement, is actually rarer than one from Appomattox, and seldom seen. The document is in anearly frame, and appears to be in very good condition. Not examined out of the frame.
