[ Autographs ] Civil War Diary Of A. B. Vorhis The Civil War diary of Union soldier A. B. Vorhis, Co. 1, 131st Pa. The legible, bold pencil manuscript details his enlistment and subsequent events from August,1862 to March, 1863, accompanied by his civilian diary for 1864 The war diary is apparently written after the events, but likely at the same time as his civilian diary, 1864 While stationed at Alexandria he writes: ' '..the Irish brigade just passed our camp. Stayed there four days... heavy firing at Bull Run... our duty to stop all stragglers which run away from the battlefield at Bull Run...' Later,he is reviewed in Washington: " '.. marched past the White House and lay in the streets half the night... The president passed us quite early' Still later, he describes his experiences at Antietam: "... rebel prisoners at Antietam passed us while laying at the junction. Col Miles command, which were paroled, also passed us with the prisoners... churches were filled with wounded and dying ...meeting trains of ambulances loaded with dying soldiers from our army and therebels also... reached the battlefield at 3in the afternoon... sharpshooters were firing at each other from both sides ...supported a battery of the Ist Army... McClellan passed us in a wagon... marched through the town of Sharpsburg... artillery tire began with great fury the 118th... were repulsed and came breaking through our ranks..." Much more detail in this excellent diary. Very good.
