[ Autographs ] SLAVE MANUMISSION CERTIFICATE Fine content manuscript D.S. 1p. 4to., Patrick County, Va., July 30, 1795 in which John Ellison after "...mature deliberate Consideration and the conviction of my own mind being fully persuaded that Freedom is the Natural Rightof all man kind & that no Law Moral or Divine has given men a Right toor property in the Persons of any of my Fellow Creatures...Do Therefore Declare that having under my care a Negro Hand named Coss I do...hereby Release unto him the said Coss all my Right Interest and Claim or pretension of Claim whatsoever as to his Person...hereafter without any Interception from me or any person..." With docketing on verso from the county court attesting to the authenticity of the document. This type of language in a manumission document is quite uncommon but we can only guess as to Ellision's motivations. A great historical piece in near fine condition.
