Description:

[ Autographs ] SLAVE ANKLE SHACKLE AND BELL Exceedingly rare iron slave ankle shackle, measures about 8" long by 5" wide, with wing- shaped "bells" at right and left. The bracelet would be opened, the ankle inserted, and the shackle forced closed. Within the wing-like extensions are a few pebbles which cause a loud rattle when the shackle is moved. These shackles were typically used on slaves who bore a propensity to flee, or who had been captured after fleeing. Typical rust, as one would expect, nevertheless very solid and completely intact.
