[ Autographs ] SAMUEL K. ZOOK (1823 - 1863) Union brigadier general who commanded a regiment on the Peninsula, mortally wounded leading his men at Gettysburg. A fine Gettysburg association war-date letter endorsed by five generals, two of whom were key figures at Gettysburg, written on the verso of a letter from Lt. Col. Alfred Champion of the 57th N.Y.V. mentioning a man who had been AWOL and seeking his dismissal. On the verso is a 14-line A.E.S. of Zook who writes: "HD. Qrs. 3rd Brigade Hancock's Division Falmouth Dec. 1/62 Approved & respectfully forwarded, upon the assumption that Kelsey has rec'd his commission direct from the Hd. Qrs. S.N.Y. & thereon been mustered into U.S. service. His commission has doubtless been obtained by incorrect statements concerning his relation to his regt. S. K. Zook Col. Comdg Brigade"; with an A.E.S. of Brig. Gen. WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK (1824-1886) who approves and forwards the letter; an E.S. of Maj. Gen. DARIUS N.COUCH (1822-1897) who does likewise; an E.S. of Bvt Maj. Gen. EDWIN VOSE SUMNER (1797-1863) who sends the letter to the Adjutant General; and an E.S. of Bvt. Brig. Gen. THOMAS M. VINCENT ( 1832-1909) who states that the man had been mustered-in. A dime-sized hole appears in a blank area just above Vincent's signature, otherwisevery good.
