[ Autographs ] ROBERT MORRIS (1734 - 1806) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, financier and politician. Morris was instrumental inthe financing of Washington's armies, and was later financially ruined through his speculation in western lands. L.S. "Robt. Morris" 1p. 8vo., Philadelphia, July 25, 1787, to an unnamed businessman regarding payment for a shipment of tobacco. In part: "...they are a Regular good House, however on your pointing out to them wherein they have acted wrong, I have no doubt they will make you the necessary satisfaction...I was a good deal surprised at finding the Tob'o had not been shipped...but consent to you paying the amount...to Messrs. Carey & Tilghman...". Light age toning and typical wear, otherwise very good.
