Description:

[ Autographs ] Pierre G. T. Beauregard 1818-1893 Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter which started the Civil War. Beauregard also led with great distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. An exquisite S.P., a hand-colored carte-de-visite photograph, 2in x 3.5in, an oval image showing the great general in a chest, up portrait in uniform as MajorGeneral. The uniform has been colored in a light blue wash, with goldapplied to his collar insignia and buttons. Directly beneath the image he has signed: 'G. T Beauregard 1871" with his usual flourish. Additionally, on the verso he writes: "To Mrs. L. L. Hicks with compliments of Gen 7 Beauregard New Orleans - Oct 31/71' Backstamp isby noted Confederate photographer W.W Washburn of New Orleans. A verysmall area in Beauregard's left upper chest has been gently rubbed, causing a small bit of the blue color to wear off, with two small toned spots to the right of his head and only slight surface soiling, none of which substantially detracts from this excellent photograph.
