[ Autographs ] Thomas J. Jackson 1824-1863 "Stonewall", Confederate lieutenant general and a brilliant yet somewhat eccentric tactician, he gained his nickname from his stand at Bull Run and served as Lee's right hand in the Seven Days, in Maryland and at Chancellorsville where he accidentally shot by Confederate pickets while riding betweenlines. Rare and important war- date autograph battlefield order signed"T J. Jackson' 1p. 7.5in x 3.25in, New Market, May 20, 1862, In pencil on the verso of a A.D.S. (in ink) of Confederate Lieutenant General Richard S. Ewell 1817-1872 On the eve of his momentous victory againstNathaniel P. Banks in the Shenandoah Valley campaign, Jackson moves quickly to capitalize on the Confederate victory at New Market days earlier. Ewell writes his superior: 'Dear Genl I enclose a dispatch h-om my aid Capt. Brown whom I sent to Gordonsville - Gen' [Lawrence O'Bryan] Branch is crossing the Gap en route for this point - I have given no orders in the premises - Resp'y R. S. Ewell" On the verso, Jackson quickly writes his reply, in full: 'about 7 miles S. of New M.1.40 Pm. May 20, 1862 Genl., Let the troops come on. I wish they were at N. market. Very resp'y yrs. T J. Jackson' Days later the forces of Ewell and Jackson would meet, capture the Union position at Fort Royal and chase Banks back north. A fine association of two of the South'smost distinguished commanders. Light folds, otherwise very good.
