BRECKENRIDGE (1821 - 1875) Vice President of the United States who was second to Lincoln in the 1860 elections, Breckenridge also became a Confederate major general who won the battle of New Market. D.S. "John C. Breckenridge," 1p. oblong 8vo., [np., n.d.], a document ordering a subscription for copies of "The Speech of Hon. Wm. R. Smith On the proposition to confer the title of Lieutenant General on Genl. [Winfield] Scott...printed at the Globe office at 50 cents per 100 copies...". Also signed by future Confederate Major General WILLIAM R. SMITH. Mounting remains to verso otherwise very good.
