[ Autographs ] JOHN BROWN (1800-1859) American abolitionist who became obsessed with idea of abolishing slavery by force, massacred five slavery adherents at Pottawatomie, seized the arsenal at Harpers Ferry and was hanged for treason. Rare A.L.S signed twice: "John Brown" and "Perkins & Brown", 1p. 4to., Troy, N.Y., Dec. 14, 1850 to his attorney J. Whipple Jenkins likely concerning one of the many lawsuits aimed at Brown. In part: "...I have just seen the under- Sheriff who says that both your communications have been received, & that he had replied to the last giving the reason why you had receivedno return from the Summons; (vis) the absence of Mr. Warren from the State...the business will be attended to on his return...Enclosed please find those I took of you; & allow me to hint that if you get noreturn within Four of Five days from the one in the hands of the Sheriff, that you write him again..."
