[ Autographs ] JOHN A. WHARTON (d. 1865) Confederate major general who commanded a regiment at Shiloh, later heading a brigade at StonesRiver and Chickamauga. Killed on April 6, 1865 in a private duel. An extremely rare D.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], June 14, 1862 as Colonel Commanding the Texas Rangers, approving a leave of absence for one of his men to visit Atlanta for ten days. An extremely rare signature, particularly in war-dated material. Some staining and soiling, clip ofcorner on right bottom margin affects three letters in one word of the text, overall good to very good.
