Lot 53
[ Autographs ] JAMES E. B. STUART (1833 - 1864) Confederate major general of cavalry, he led a daring reconnaissance of McClellan's forces, riding around the entire army, led a number of raids into Union territory, turned up late at Gettysburg leaving Lee "blind", mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern. An exceedingly rare war-dated endorsement, in full: "Hd. Qrs. Cav. Div., Feb.7, 1863. Resp. forwarded & recommended that Wm. Collins be commissioned Captain of Co H. 3rd. Va. Cavalry, J. E. B. Stuart, Major Genl. Comdg". Stuart in war-dated material is excessively rare, and this is the first such endorsement of Stuart we have offered. Slight smudge on the "B" in "J.E.B." and the "S" in Stuart , otherwise very good.
