In part: "...I suppose you hear and discuss as widely as the rest of us here the rumors about changes in the cabinet, & etc. Mr. Eveleth says that Wilmington is to be attacked very soon... land] Mr. Stanton is to go to the Supreme Court and Gen.Butler Sec. of War; that the notorious corruption of Gen. Banks during his administration at New Orleans has put him out of question.." Major General Benjamin Butler was much reviled on both sides for his draconian and allegedly corrupt occupation of New Orleans from early in the war. Fine.
